Netflix finally won an Oscar for the 40-minute documentary The White Helmets, although the director, Syrian cinematographer Khaled Khatib, was reportedly denied entry to the U.S. at the last minute.

The White Helmets, which is streaming on Netflix, is a harrowing look at the Syria Civil Defense, a group of ordinary Syrians who work tirelessly to rescue civilians affected by the civil war and extract people from the rubble.

A story of modern day heroism. Congrats to #TheWhiteHelmets team! Winner of The Academy Award for Best Documentary Short http://pic.twitter.com/zTSdDNAvJw
