This country just banned cash transactions over $4,500

India’s war against black money has led to several new policies and orders of late, one of which was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday in his Union Budget presentation in the Parliament. 

The country has banned all cash transactions above Rs 300,000 (roughly $4,500) from April 1.

This move follows last year’s ban on high-value currency notes that had sucked in 86% of the cash in circulation and sent India’s 1.3 billion people into a collective frenzy. 

Jaitley’s decision is based on a recommendation made by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money that was set up by India’s apex court.  Read more…

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop dream is closer to becoming a reality

Three university teams have been the first to test drive their pods in SpaceX’s depressurized track as part of Elon Musk’s Hyperloop competition.

The Delft University Hyperloop team clinched the top price for their prototype pod in the first phase. The Technical University of Munich, Germany received a price for the fastest pod, while MIT were awarded best design.

Samsung to launch something on Feb. 26, but it probably won’t be a phone

If it were any other February, we’d probably be waiting for Samsung to launch a new version of its flagship smartphone. But after the Note7 fiasco and the subsequent long investigation into what happened, the Galaxy S8 launch got pushed to a later, yet-unannounced date. 

However, judging by this invite I’ve just received, Samsung will be launching something this February — and it’s probably going to be a tablet.

The invite itself has no info beyond the date and place, and frankly, the image could be a stylized representation of anything. But the Galaxy Tab S3 has recently been certified by the FCC, which means it should be ready for a February launch.  Read more…

This country will give all its senior citizens a biometrics-based smart health card

India’s audacious push to bring and make use of Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometrics database, was one of the highlights at the annual financial budget unveiled in the country today.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that senior citizens in the country will soon get Aadhaar-based smart cards. These cards would feature their health and other information, Jaitley added. The government will first run a pilot project in 15 districts during the 2017-18 fiscal year. 

Aadhaar is a biometrics-backed (fingerprint, iris, or facial features) national ID system that the government is positioning as a solution to bring its 1.3 billion people to the digital age. Over one billion people and 99% of the country’s adult population are already enrolled in the system.  Read more…

Teenager receives a huge gift surprise from Miss Universe contestant

A teenager in the Philippines came home to a dream come true — a prom dress that graced the Miss Universe stage just days before.

15-year-old Zyra Nicole Cifra received Miss Bulgaria-Universe’s blue gown, after the teen’s mother wrote to the beauty queen.

Violina Ancheva, Miss Bulgaria 2016, said in a Facebook post on Monday shortly after the pageant was over that she was looking to donate her dress to someone in need in the Philippines.

Cifra’s mother, Issay Gallano, sent Ancheva a private message on Facebook to appeal for the dress. In her message, she noted that she was a single mother and was scraping some savings together to afford a prom dress for Cifra. Read more…
