For the better part of 20 years, Derek Jeter ruled New York like few celebrities before or since.

He wore the Yankees’ pinstripes from 1995 to 2014, racking up more hits than anyone who wore them before. Was called “Mr. November” for his habit of coming up huge en route to five World Series titles, and “The Captain” because that’s what he was.

Deep in the belly of the American media machine, he became renowned — and resented — for exercising meticulous control over his public image: Late-inning heroics in the Bronx, exiting the clubhouse looking fitted for a GQ shoot, whisked through the side-door of a Manhattan hotspot as a pack of reporters shouts futile questions.
