This airport is already using facial recognition on U.S. citizens

TwitterFacebook

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) evidently doesn’t need Congress to begin using facial recognition of United States citizens.

Officials at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and Logan International Airport in Boston earlier this week began to scan faces of U.S. citizens and other passengers on specific flights. Congress has nine times passed legislation authorizing the use of biometric technology on non-U.S. citizens as a way of verifying when foreign nationals enter and exit the country, but they’ve never authorized such legislation for citizens, according to surveillance law experts. Why AirPods will eventually come free with every iPhone

TwitterFacebook

The iPhone of the future may or may not look much like its predecessors, but at some point in the next few years it’s almost a sure bet that Apple is going to get rid of the Lightning port. The industry’s move toward wireless charging is clear, and by killing the headphone jack, Apple clearly has no love for any particular connector, even its own.

There’s a clear consequence of dropping all ports, though, and it begs the question: What will Apple do about the headphones? Today, it packages Lightning EarPods in the box along with a dongle for traditional headphones. But any cellphone needs to come with a hands-free way of taking calls, and without a port, the answer is clear: go wireless. Read more…

Ring in Canada Day with Trudeau’s best moments (and forget about Trump for a while)

TwitterFacebook

O Canada! it’s a big day, eh?

To celebrate Canada Day 2017, which marks 150 years since the country’s founding on July 1, 1867, please allow us to reminisce fondly on Justin Trudeau‘s year in the spotlight.

In the midst of America’s own political dumpster fire, Canada’s prime minister has captured hearts and inspired joy with his charming demeanor and undeniably adorable antics. We thank him for this.

Of course, we’re aware that some of Trudeau’s actions may also be not-so-coincidentally great photo opps, and there’s no denying he’s had some major Tru-don’t moments, like the time he called Fidel Castro a “remarkable leader.”  Read more…

I tried to write a novel in a month and now I have a publishing offer

TwitterFacebook

Back in December 2015, I wrote a fairly waffling account of my attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days for National Novel Writing Month.

You can read the whole thing here if you want, but the TL;DR version is this: I had very little sleep, drank far too much tea, and all-in-all felt like I had aged about 10 years in the process. But in the end I just about managed it.

After reaching the 50,000 word target, I had three main aims: 1) actually finish the book, 2) have a stab at getting it published, and 3) somehow become best friends with Stephen King and/or J.K. Rowling, who are pretty much my literary heroes and the subject of at least 80% of the articles I write for Mashable. Read more…
