A Snapchat drone?! Here’s what we know

TwitterFacebook

Snap Inc. has been playing with dronesThe New York Times reported Tuesday that the company has worked on building its own drones, citing three people “briefed on the project who asked to remain anonymous because the details are confidential.”

The piece doesn’t get into details, but the premise is intriguing — and not at all surprising for a company that defines itself as a “camera company” in its own mission.

“Snap is a camera company. We feel like we’re really at the beginning of what cameras can do, evolve from being just a piece of hardware to software connected to the internet,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in a 35-minute video released about the company ahead of its initial public offering. Get free flights to New Zealand, y’all. But only if you accept a job interview

TwitterFacebook

If you’re working in the tech world, New Zealand wants YOU. Specifically, the city of Wellington — self-titled tech and innovation capital of the South Pacific.

A program called Looksee Wellington is giving 100 people free flights and accommodation to check out the city for a week. But there’s a catch.

The city is yours to visit and explore, but you’ll also need to commit to pre-arranged job interviews with tech companies in the area.

The city is home to companies like accounting software group Xero and Weta Digital, who did the visual effects in Avatar and Lord of the Rings. Read more…

Adele invites drag impersonator on stage to belt tunes and take selfies

TwitterFacebook

Adele fans love Adele the way she loves Beyoncé or raps Nicki Minaj’s verse in “Monster”: fiercely and loudly. And what better way to show it than via some gender performativity?

One die-hard Adele fan, drag performer DJ Feminem was able to show off her devotion for the Grammy-winning singer IRL, when she was pulled up on stage during her first ever show in Australia.

There was singing, there was selfies. It was awesome.

Feminem was among the 65,000 people packed into Domain Stadium in Perth on Tuesday night, when “Some guy from the crew grabbed my hand and lead me onto the stage,” as she put it according to WA Today. Read more…

Hyperloop One begins initial talks with the Indian government

TwitterFacebook

Hyperloop One’s high-speed transportation solution could reach India in the near future. That’s the plan, at least.

Hyperloop One executives, including CEO Rob Lloyd and chief chairman Shervin Pishevar spent three hours in a room packed of Indian government officials and journalists on Tuesday. That’s how keen they are to bring Elon Musk’s idea to the country.

Although at the first sight, they don’t look as the perfect match (India is known for its archaic regulations, over-crowded roads and poorly-designed urban areas), the two have begun talking.

At the event, India’s railway minister, Suresh Prabhu, said the government is open to further discussions and definitely sees the need for Hyperloop One’s high-speed trains. “Though we are not hyper about it,” she joked. Read more…

Trump was caught practicing his speech, so the internet made jokes

TwitterFacebook

It was a big night for Donald Trump: his first major address to a joint session of Congress. His last big speech was at his inauguration and only clocked in at about 15 minutes, so Tuesday night’s one-hour address was going to be a bigger challenge.

That’s why he needed to practice beforehand. He was spotted in his limo going over what we assume were some tough parts of the speech just before he arrived at the Capitol.

Sorry Beyoncé fans, here’s who you’ll get at Coachella instead

TwitterFacebook

The organizers of Coachella have found Beyoncé’s replacement.

It’s Lady Gaga! Which is cool, but … she’s not Beyoncé.

They could have replaced her with Jesus and Elvis fresh from a time machine and some people would still be disappointed.

Let’s party in the desert! 🌴✌️🎤 http://pic.twitter.com/2SYOv7TscF

— xoxo, Joanne (@ladygaga) March 1, 2017

After it was originally announced Beyoncé was performing, both weekends of Coachella sold out in three hours. And the general admission starting price was $399. (Record time for a Coachella sellout, according to LA Weekly, was 40 minutes in 2015. Because Drake, Jack White and AC/DC?) Read more…

Fireball video provokes UFO debate because we’re desperate for aliens

TwitterFacebook

We should know better by now. We’ve said it before: It’s not aliens. It’s never aliens. Stop saying it’s aliens.

In fact, sometimes the most spectacular-looking “UFOs” in our skies are actually pretty mundane. Sorry.

On Tuesday, Lee-Anne Peters rose just before sunrise in Hobart, Tasmania. She was making cupcakes for her daughter’s birthday when she “noticed this strange thing in the sky.”

She thought it was a plane at first, but her daughter speculated that it looked more like a meteor thanks to its fiery tail. “It was definitely quite an exciting start to the day,” she said. Read more…
